South Africa is set to gain hugely as an offshore investment destination due to hosting the 2010 football World Cup, it has been suggested. Speaking to property investors in the city of Port Elizabeth - one of the tournament venues - ambassador for the tournament and former Manchester United goalkeeper Gary Bailey noted that the economy will gain R15 billion (£1.17 billion) from the event. He stated: "Even after the tournament there will still be benefits. It will allow us to brand the country and will bring immense tourism opportunities." Such gains could interest offshore investors looking to South Africa as a place for economic growth as a result of the initial economic benefits and their legacy. A number of cities in South Africa could gain from the attention focused on them as host venues. In addition to Port Elizabeth, matches will be played in Cape Town, Durban, Johannesburg, Bloemfontein, Nelspruit, Polokwane, Rustenberg and Pretoria.
