Introduction...

Let me just ruin the entire review by saying I don't like Nokia. I have gone into this with a preconceived idea that Nokias are rubbish, due to a bad sitting experience I had with one of the older models (don't ask).

But let me do my best to not let that experience affect my judgement.

The E72 marks the upgrade of the E71, punching a much improved navigation system, revised "look" and a version of Symbian which I quite enjoyed.

I like...

  • New look and build quality
  • Industry best navigation system (2 year free license)
  • Fluid email integration and user interface
  • The usual, excellent Symbian calendar and contacts application
  • Symbian now includes a quick dial facility where you can dial straight from the home screen
  • Symbian has adopted the "app store" philosophy with OVI, so Facebook and MySpace apps are available and pre-loaded
  • Simple, straight forward operation
  • Tactile and touch D-pad... nifty.
  • Immediate operation as modem, even using Ubuntu OS!
  • Animated user interface eye candy
  • Active notes for adding sound, pictures and more

I don't like...

  • Fiddly shortcut keys between menu softkeys and phone keys (you end up pushing the wrong thing)
  •  Dated Symbian operating system "look" (This same basic look was on my Nokia 6600 in 2005... a phone I loved by the way)
  • Old calculator app
  • Confusing "modes"

Mmm... list of "likes" is longer than "don't likes". So perhaps there is more to this than a bad sitting experience.
